What is the Open Fire Academy?
The Open Fire Academy is a collaborative resource for emergency services organizations and centers of learning. The key element of a community is that it evolves and expands based on its members commitment. Looking beyond simply building a web-based learning tool, we are creating a central point for sharing ideas, training resources, and research information by breaking down the barriers that hinder communication. As such, we are following the philosophy of Open Source Development by making the content of this community "free and open" to those who wish to utilize it and are open to sharing their own findings and information. The site itself is created and the content is generated by the staff, instructors, students, and committed members of the community. If you or your organization would like to become a part of this Open Source Learning Project, simply create an account.

What Does the Open Fire Academy Do?
The Open Fire Academy is a Training Portal for the fire service. There is so much available to the fire service for training purposes, but so much of it is decentralized. Our goal is to provide the resources and location for the emergency services and training institutions to assist them in training. To deliver that effort, some of the projects we are involved in are:
  • Creating and managing Training Management Systems for departments and training institutions.
  • Providing an avenue for emergency services agencies to share and exchange training materials and content.
  • Partnering with organizations to expand training opportunities for emergency services.
  • Centralizing emergency services training resources to greater capitalize on them by the fire service.
In short, our purpose is to create support emergency services internationally by providing a central point for the fire service's knowledge base. The key is that all of this is developed and managed by a core of volunteers committed to their fellow firefighters and emergency responders. As this core continues to grow and our resources expand, we will be able to greater serve those who give so much to protect life and property.

How Can You Get Involved?
The Open Fire Academy is built on volunteers and those truly committed to the fire service. Our ranks currently live and work in over 44 countries and are focused on ensuring that all firefighters and emergency responders are well trained to meet the demands of today's service. There are a number of ways to get involved and the primary requirement is a commitment to creating a better, safer fire service. Here are some ways:
  • Developing content that can be shared such as courses, training, and other resources.
  • Managing or helping with the discussion forums.
  • Promote the Open Fire Academy to departments and training institutions
  • Become a mentor or resource for those learning and those teaching.
  • Creating plugins and additions to the Open Fire Academy and member sites.

There is so much to do, and everyone's involvement counts.
